Abstract

The use of non-invasive sampling extended the studies in wildlife animals genetics. Among the biological materials that can be collected, hairs are a good choice of non-invasive material because of the DNA quality they possess. The collection of this material requires the elaboration of traps, and several studies have been carried out with animals in the northern hemisphere. However, the use of this methodology is still scarce in neotropical animals with evasive behavior, as is the case of deer of the genus Mazama. The present work seeks to develop a hair trap that can be applied to this group in a natural environment. For the development of the traps will be tested different adhesive surfaces as well as different structure arrangements, aiming to adapt to each of the five Mazama species in Brazil. It will be evaluated the number of hairs left from each trap and the viability of species selection by the configuration of the same. It is hoped to obtain an effective and practical method of obtaining this biological matrix in Brazilian forest cervids. (AU)
