Abstract

One of the destinations used for effluent disposal in the coastal regions are the oceans, since they have a natural purification capacity. In Brazil, the Santos Submarine Outfall is considered one of the main emissaries of the country, reaching the flow of seven thousand liters per second, corresponding to effluent of the cities of Santos and São Vicente. However, the practice of effluent disposal in the oceans may have negative impacts on aquatic biota, once the treatments used are not appropriate and many contaminants can reach the water and sediments. Considering the possibility of negative impacts being generated to marine life due to the action of effluents launched, this work aims to perform acute toxicity tests with marine amphipod Parhyale hawaiensis with sediment samples under the influence of Santos Submarine Outfall. Samplings will be made at four different points and evaluated interstitial water, elutriate and organic extract of the sediments. This research can be used to contribute to the analysis of the impacts of the effluents in the marine environment, and adding information for the protection of the life present in this environment.
