Abstract

Marine and freshwater ecosystems are used as the final destination for domestic, industrial and farming effluents. According to Brazilian legislation, effluents should not have the potential to impact the receiving body, both fresh and salt water and to assess this impact, toxicity tests are required. The objective of this work is to test the acute toxicity of urban sewage using different treatments using freshwater and marine organisms. Effluents will be sampled in five WWTPs in the city of Campinas (SP) with different types of treatment. The tests will be carried out with miniaturized protocols with Daphinia similis and Parhyale hawaiensis. The data will be analyzed statically by logistic regression and calculation of the EC50 in%. This project is linked to the Brazilian Water Research Center - BWRC, which has SANASA as a partner. The results obtained are expected to assist sewage treatment companies in choosing low cost and maximum efficiency technologies for removing toxicity for both freshwater and estuarine/marine dumping, in addition to indicating possible adjustments to be made in their processes to anticipate the requirements of current legislation.
