Abstract

This project proposal is part of the author's PhD research, on São Paulo metro stations and mobility terminals. It advances at this stage in a study of the project for the expansion of Paris metro, the Grand Paris Express, in order to enlarge the knowledge of this theme. Considered the major project of this type currently in development in Europe, this plan foresees the construction of four new metro lines, the extension of two existing ones and sixty eight stations. For both architecture and urban planning, it is an important source of knowledge, and can bring major contribution to think the expansion of São Paulo metro and contemporary challenges to stations and terminals designs. Such as the research in Brazil, in Paris the analysis path will go through the metro network in a transversal way, from the net to the underground of the station. The design for mobility systems historically represent a symbolic vision of the future of the city, and increasingly gather new functions and importances. The research will analyze the relation between the station's underground and upper level street spaces, when the design composes a station with a new monumentality. Further on, the political and institutional organization that support the development of the plan, with its goals, will also be discussed, as well as the proposals for urban development in the periphery that will receive new stations. In the scope of the architectural design, the research will evaluate the architects practices, through design competitions to internal demands of the metropolitan organization, besides the architectures themselves. The research in São Paulo will be enriched by this new theoretical and design repertoire. The local scale, of the urban design that surround the stations, guides the analyzes in questioning the city that one wants to built.
