Abstract

Introduction: Laryngeal papillomatosis is a benign neoplasm divided in two groups: juvenile and adult laryngeal papillomatosis both caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). A possible risk factor for recurrent laryngeal papillomatosis in adults is extra-esophageal reflux, through the damage caused by the enzyme pepsin present in gastric juice. Objectives: to correlate the presence of pepsin and H pylori in laryngeal papillomatosis (PL) with progression of the disease. Material and methods: Lesions of 60 individuals with papillomatosis (n=30 juvenile and n=30 adult) will be retrospectively collected and reviewed after staining with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and it will be subdivided into Group no aggressive and Group aggressive based on Derkay index. An immunohistochemical reaction will be performed for the anti-pepsin and H pylori antibody. All clinical-pathological characteristics founded will be compared between the groups by the Chi-square test or the Fisher exact test with a significance level of 5%. (AU)
