Abstract

An increasing body of evidence demonstrates that sedentary behavior is an independent risk factor that predisposes to worse health indicators and higher risk for all-cause mortality in various populations. It is also known that inadequate food intake may be correlated with worse metabolic markers and with greater risk of developing chronic diseases. Ultimately, the maintenance of both behaviors (i.e., sedentary behavior and bad eating habits) could synergistically act to aggravate these parameters. To our knowledge, no study investigated possible associations between these behaviors and health-related markers in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a group of patients who are known to be at high risk of developing other chronic diseases and, to remain most of the daily hours in sedentary behavior (~10 hours/day). In view of the above, it is relevant to evaluate the food consumption of these patients and to verify possible associations between food consumption, sedentary behavior and health-related markers. Therefore, this project will aim to evaluate the sedentary behavior, the level of physical activity and the food intake of patients with RA, as well as to verify possible associations of these parameters with cardiometabolic risk factors in these patients. A descriptive cross-sectional association study with women diagnosed with RA will be conducted, in which the patients will be submitted to the following evaluations: (1) sedentary behavior and level of physical activity; (2) food consumption; (3) cardiometabolic risk factors (i.e., blood parameters, insulin sensitivity, anthropometry and blood pressure).
