Abstract

The ability to synchronize mitochondrial signaling pathways to respond to energy fluctuations within the cell is a central aspect of mammalian homeostasis. In this context, mitochondria play a major role. Therefore, the molecular control of mitochondrial function represents a fundamental aspect of mammalian physiology and defects in the integrity of this system can lead to severe perturbations in cell homeostasis causing a vast spectrum of pathologies such as obesity and type 2 diabetes. The main goal of this project is to develop a high throughput screening (HTS) biological platform for mitochondrial homeostasis evaluation. Through this approach, we expect to identify novel biomolecules involved in the regulation of mitochondrial biogenesis by screening previously selected candidates from our lab (Thematic project-16/23008-5). Given the method versatility, we will also explore the HTS platform to screen compounds with mitochondrial function. Finally, we hope that this method can be used to generate knowledge with great impact in the field of metabolism and mitochondrial biology and ultimately contribute to the development of novel therapies for metabolic diseases such as obesity and type 2 diabetes.
