Prevention and control actions of the Canine and Human Leishmaniasis, in a transdisciplinar perspective, in the city of Araçatuba, São Paulo, Brazil

Abstract

The American Visceral Leishmaniasis (AVL) is a disease of utmost epidemiological importance worldwide. In Brazil, this parasitosis is caused by the Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum chagasi, being transmitted to humans, wild and domestic animals through the phlebotomine vectors bites. Therefore, prevention and control actions of the canine and human visceral leishmaniasis will be imposed in this project, in a transdisciplinar perspective, in the urban area in the city of Araçatuba, SP. A total of 72 households will be monitored for a period of two years, with the carrying out of monthly phlebotomine captures, with light traps of the CDC type. Epidemiological questionnaires on AVL will be applied to residents as interviews, and from this outcome, an educational action will be designed, which will be carried out every six months. Aspiration biopsies of lymph nodes will be performed, for parasitological analyses, as well as serological tests like enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and the Dual Plate Plataform (DPP - BioManguinhos®) of dogs for the Leishmania spp. diagnosis, and collaring of such, every eight months, such as molecular analysis of the canine samples and vector insects. Thus, in a joint work with the health agents, an educational program for the control of the Visceral Leishmaniasis in dogs and human beings will be implemented in those endemic areas. (AU)
