Abstract

The development of dental zirconia with higher yttria content, 4 mol.% yttria partially stabilized zirconia (4Y-PSZ) and 5 mol.% yttria partially stabilized zirconia (5Y-PSZ), which present high strength and excellent translucency, aims to significantly expand the clinical indications of monolithic zirconia restorations. The increased yttria content results in the presence of the stable cubic phase in these zirconia materials, significantly reducing phase transformation due to both mechanical stresses and low temperature degradation. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the effects of various clinically relevant surface treatments on ultra translucent zirconia, including phase composition, surface characteristics, aging resistance, and mechanical properties. Twonew ultra translucent partially stabilized monolithic zirconia will be assessed: 4Y-PSZ and 5YPSZ. Three mol.% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia (3Y-TZP) will be used as a reference.Specimens will be produced using different surface treatment methods: machining, polishingbefore sintering, polishing after sintering and sandblasting. The specimens will be evaluated, before and after low temperature aging, by different techniques: microstructure (n=3), surface topography (n=3), roughness (n=10), zirconia phase characterization (X-ray diffraction analysis - XRD) (n=3), hardness (n=10) and four-point bending flexural strength (n=10). Quantitative data obtained will be analyzed statistically (p <0.05) and qualitative observations will be thoroughly described in comparison.
