Process modeling and analysis of an eHealth System-of-Systems

Abstract

Systems-of-systems (SoS) have emerged as an answer to the ever growing complexity of software-intensive systems that are formed by independent and complex software systems. In particular for the health care domain, there is a number of heterogeneous health systems, such as electronic health records, electronic medical records, health information systems, hospital management systems, and regulation systems that have been combined to form a SoS, hereinafter referred to as eHealth SoS. Improving the quality of and the access to health care services is central to leverage the true potential of an eHealth SoS for supporting quick and effective actions by health care providers (including physicians, hospitals, nurses, government and health policy makers). The main problem addressed in this project is that in Brazil and even in developed countries there is a lack of a complete understanding regarding underlying processes that must be supported by such an eHealth SoS. This lack can ultimately lead to patient care impairment and even death due to inefficient, incompatible health systems. The main goal of this project is to contribute to the development of eHealth SoS for the Brazilian scenario. For this, the candidate will design, represent, and evaluate process models that underly this SoS and will be further automated by this system. Results of this project, i.e., process models, will be quantitatively and qualitatively evaluated with stakeholders and health care providers at the Medical School of Ribeirão Preto at USP (FMRP-USP). This project will also contribute to a post-doctorate research project for the design of the software architecture of this eHealth SoS (FAPESP N.2017/22207-2, under review) as well as to a larger research project for the design, evaluation, and evolution of SoS (FAPESP 2017/06195-9, 01/07/2017 to 30/06/2019).
