Abstract

The United Nations (UN), with the aim of increasing surveillance capacity and improving the efficiency of its peacekeeping operations, has chosen to introduce the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), popularly known as drones. The introduction of this new technology raises many doubts about the political and territorial sovereignty of the States, the protection and processing of the collected data, the privacy of the civil population and its knowledge about the use of drones, among other issues, besides the very effectiveness of the use in peacekeeping missions. In this way, using bibliographical and documentary sources, this research will analyze the use of drones by the UN peacekeeping missions in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Mali, in order to evaluate the real effectiveness of the use of this technology in the management of conflicts.
