Abstract

This project proposes the documentary and bibliographical research on the history painting in France at the end of the XIXth century, the visual and intellectual references received by Benedito Calixto during his stay at the Julian Academy (1883-1884) and its impact for the elaboration of the painting "Fundação de São Vicente" (o.o.c., 192 x 385 cm, 1900). To achieve these objectives, it is planned the research of the documentary sources in the French National Archives and on research centers of the great museums visited by the painter. The catalogues of the painting collections, the exhibition plans and the analysis of the iconographic links between these paintings and the one conceived by B. Calixto, donated to the Museu Paulista in 1900, will be the fundamental sources to better understand the dialogues between french and brazilian history painting and creation of political consciousness based on "musealization" practices of artistic representations of national historical events.
