Abstract

Species of the Leishmania genus parasitize mammals in the New World and have life cycles with alternation between vertebrates and invertebrates. Most species develop in hematophagous arthropods, which may belong to various orders and families. Cutaneous Leishmaniasis is an important zoonosis and has both wild and domestic animals as important known reservoirs and one of the main causative species is Leishmania (V.) braziliensis. The tegumentary form of Leishmaniasis is widespread in the Brazilian territory and, although it has a less severe prognosis than the visceral form, it is extremely important because it has harmful potential to the mucous membranes and to the skin, making this form of the disease also have a great load emotional, socially affecting patients' lives.
