Abstract

Bacteria of the Salmonella genus are widely distributed in nature and hold the capability to infect humans and animals. Non-typhoidal Salmonella may persist in the digestive tract of chickens upon infection, which usually relates the poultry-derived products as source of infection to humans. The detection of Salmonella spp. in commercial poultry undermine the quality of the final product and negatively impact the companies involved by leading to economic losses and blockade of exportation. The usage of antimicrobial agents to control pathogenic bacteria may pose a risk to animal and public health as their excessive utilization may contribute to the emergence of resistant bacteria. Given the importance held by the poultry industry in providing high-quality food at a low cost, the present study aims at investigating the presence of Salmonella spp in commercial egg-producing farms as well as the antimicrobial resistance profile of the isolated strains.
