Abstract

This project focuses on the period 1970-1973 to analyze the relations established between Chile and Cuba in the cultural sphere, in order to verify to what extent the socialist project connected both countries and how the different paths chosen by the governments to make the revolution reverberated in the intellectual medium. Furthermore, I expect to analyze the similarities and differences observed between the governments led by Salvador Allende and Fidel Castro considering the cultural policies of the interchanging flow of Chilean and Cuban intellectuals and the cultural debate of the period. Not only the correlations by the governments themselves are expected to be analyzed, but also between the governments and the intellectuals; and among the intellectuals in that context, verifying if their positions about the "cultural issue" contributed to soften or reinforce the differences between the Cuban Revolution and the Chilean Way to Socialism. To achieve these objectives, press vehicles from both countries and other documents produced by left-wing intellectuals and politicians will be used as main sources of research. The proposed study aims to draw attention to the importance of thinking about the governments led by Allende and Castro at the regional level, as well as to make explicit the richness and the complexity of the cultural debate held in Latin America in the 1970s.
