Abstract The primary question addressed in this research proposal is whether or not the theory of communicative action (Habermas) grapples with the challenges to social theory posed by the experience of cultural globalization. It assumes that cultural globalization is a total sociological phenomenon which sheds light to the cultural diversity and the cultural entanglements among societies as immanent features of the human condition, both at the historical (diachrony) and present (synchrony) dimensions of our world experience. At the micro level, this is shown in the recent research on aesthetic-cultural cosmopolitanism as well as in selected quantitative and qualitative sociological research, postcolonial ethnographies and historiography. Based on this, I argue that the crescendum going from communicative action and strategic action, lifeworld and system, to the socio-moral and cognitive-technological evolutionary spheres, gives shape to a culturally endogenous concept of society, thereby preventing us from approaching the entanglements among societies, i.e. cultural globalization. I then formulate a hermeneutical-sociological hypothesis which claims that, when starting with Gadamer's hermeneutical preconditions of our world experience, we can outline a complementary perspective of Habermas' theory of communicative action. While never losing sight of the macro level, this perspective focuses on the entanglements among societies at the micro level and conceives the experience of cultural globalization as a hermeneutical one, its medium being a concept of intercultural understanding. The methodological approach is reconstruction and follows an empirical-theoretical deductive procedure. This research aims to contribute to the fundamentals of the cosmopolitan social theory project by introducing a hermeneutically based intercultural perspective. (AU) | |
