Abstract

The object domain of this research project circumscribes the internal connection between modernization and cosmopolitanism recently established in social theory. The central intention of this connection is to open modernization theory to globalization. In this context, Jürgen Habermas' and Ulrich Beck's theoretical programs are prominent. Despite its innovations, I argue that such widening of the research scope has insufficiencies in the theoretical, methodological and normative spheres. Such insufficiencies come from conceiving modernization only as societal rationalization. Considering applied studies on current cosmopolitanism - concerning the mediatization of the environmental issue, cultural identity, and post-coloniality - two hypotheses are outlined. The first one suggests a concept of experience of mundialization constructed as hermeneutic experience. The second hypothesis suggests a corresponding notion of situation by means of Hans-Georg Gadamer's concept of hermeneutical situation and Alfred Schütz' and Thomas Luckmann's phenomenological concept of situation. The general goal of this proposal is to explore conceptual ways to open social theory to mundialization and cosmopolitanism. The methodological approach distinguishes three successive interpretative stages, and is guided by an empirical-theoretical orientation. This research proposal profits from and debates with fields of knowledge carefully selected from the philosophy of social sciences, sociology, geography, anthropology, political science and postcolonial studies.
