Abstract

Running is effective in increasing levels of physical activity, and also results in health benefits. However, the implementation of running as a means of promoting physical activity might also result in adverse effects such as running-related injuries (RRI). RRIs pose the highest risk in running. Effective interventions on reducing the risk of RRIs are sparse in the literature. Therefore, this research proposal is aimed at developing and evaluating a prevention program on RRIs in novice and recreational runners. To this end, the Intervention Mapping (IM) framework will be used to engage the community in the development of the prevention program. Participants in this qualitative study will be members of the community involved with running (runners, coaches, healthcare professionals, members of running groups, researchers, etc.) and residents of the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo. Focus groups will be conducted with the following objectives (IM steps): (1) to determine the overall objectives of the program, including an analysis of the problem addressed; (2) to develop matrices including each behavior to be adopted and/or modified and the determinants of such behavior; (3) to determine strategies for implementing new behavior or changing risk behaviors; (4) to develop the actions of the prevention program, establishing the tasks for each agent of the program, the materials to be used and/or distributed and the operational organization of the program; (5) to develop strategies related to the dissemination, adoption, implementation and continuity of the program; and (6) to monitor and to evaluate the prevention program. This study will show the process of developing a community-based prevention program, which will increase the likelihood of the program to be effective and implementable in "real life". (AU)
