Abstract

Hydrochars have been produced with by-products from the sugarcane industry, in which the nutrients and carbon content depends on the reaction conditions (time, temperature and additives). The presence of 'like' humic substances would provide properties such as those found in Terra Mulata soils, known for their high fertility. The MIO (Mediterranean Institut of Oceanography) research group at the University of Toulon-France is internationally recognized for the characterization of humic and fulvic acids by Molecular Fluorescence and data treatment using CP/PARAFAC, as well as the complexation capacity emploing quenching analysis and Time Resolved Fluorescence (TRF). The research group also makes use of the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) technique to obtain information on the conformational characteristics of the carbon nuclei present in the sample. Considering the work already started in Brazil, this project aims the structural characterization of humic and fulvic acids extracted from Terra Mulata soils and from hydrochars produced in different conditions, as well as to determine the complexation capacity with copper and if it possible the interaction with Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH). The realization of these experiments under the supervision of Professor Dr. Stéphane Mounier, specialist in the proposed techniques, will facilitate the understanding and interpretation of results, allowing a comparison between the materials with the purpose of applying hydrochar as a soil conditioner. This intership will be a unique opportunity to generate unpublished data that will enable a better understanding of the material properties produced in comparison to the Terra Mulata soils, providing important information about the role of carbonization process conditions in the material humic characteristics.
