Wet distillers grains fed crossbred Nellore/Angus on feedlot: feed intake, feeding behavior and ruminal health

Abstract

Feed costs account for a large proportion of the total costs in beef production, making continuous demand for alternative and economical feeds for use in the animal diets. The option it has been gaining prominence recently in Brazil, it is the wet distillery grains, due to the beginning of the ethanol production from corn. In view of the above, the objectives of the present study will be evaluate the effects of the inclusion of increasing levels of wet distilled grains in diets with ground corn in the feed intake, feeding behavior and ruminal health of ½ Nelore-Angus in feedlot cattle. One hundred bulls with 370 kg average weight in the beginning of feedlot, will be randomized in blocks design divided in four treatments 0; 15; 30 and 45% inclusion of corn distillery from DM of dietary. For an evaluation of feeding behavior, the animals will be observed for 24 hours every 5 min, six days after the beginning of the finish period and at the end of the same. A selectivity of feed ingredients, evaluated through the sampling of the diet without observation day and left over after 24 hours. Blood samples will be collected from jugular vein of two animals per pen, seven days after the beginning of the finish period and at the end of the same, to evaluate the metabolic blood profile of the animals. After 130 days of trough, the animals will be slaughted in a commercial slaughter plant and will be evaluated ruminitis indexes and incidence of hepatic abscesses. Rumen samples will be collected to papillae evaluation with morphological and histological analysis. The data obtained will be submitted to analysis of variance using the procedure PROC MIXED of the SAS software and the Tukey test for means comparasion, will be considered significant P <0.05. (AU)
