Abstract

The research abroad aims to identify the permanences and transformations of the area surrounding the Campanhã railway station in Porto, Portugal, contributing to the understanding of its role as a driving force for urban development and urban landscape configuration. The research will be carried out from the concepts of urban morphology, which allow the understanding of the current city shape, its genesis and the transformations suffered over time. The intention is to evaluate the way surrounds area the area of the station of Campanhã is occupied and use the results obtained to compare with the case of Brazil, understanding the importance of the railway structures conservation before the necessary interventions for the transportation system modernization. Thus, in the end, it is intended to carry out a comparative analysis between two distinct urban contexts, Presidente Prudente and Porto: the first one, in which the railroad is a reference element for the design and foundation of the city, but which is now deactivated, and the other, where the railway contributes to the transformation of the landscape of the old city and whose modal remains an important means of transporting for goods and people. From the contact with other realities, it is possible to establish analogies, considering the similarities and differences between the impacts caused by the arrival of the station and the railway in different situations. Through this experience, it is hoped to broaden and deepen the knowledge about the methods of urban morphology and their importance for city planning. (AU)
