Abstract

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a complex autoimmune disease with clinical manifestations in different organs and systems. Genetic factors significantly influence on susceptibility to this disease, but they do not explain the increase in incidence that has been observed in a short period of time. In this way, environmental factors seem to have importance in SLE etiology. Recently, air pollution has been associated with systemic inflammatory responses and autoimmune diseases. Thus, air pollution may have an influence in SLE development. To evaluate this we will analyze and characterize the effects of exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) from Sao Paulo air pollution in the development of SLE in genetically predisposed female mice (NZBWF1 lineage). The following methods will be utilized: clinical observations (weight gain/loss and SLE disease evolution), laboratorial tests (dosage of proteinuria and creatininuria and dosage of oxidative stress), immunological parameters (cytokine and autoantibodies quantification) and histological analyses (observation of pathological and stereological alterations). With these analyses we expect to obtain more information about SLE etiology and reinforce the need to the reduction of air pollution levels. (AU)
