Abstract

In this project we are proposing to investigate halo and cluster structure of unstable nuclei using direct and fusion reactions measurements with radioactive ion beams. Halo and cluster structures, present in exotic nuclei, are among the most exciting phenomena observed in nuclei far away from the valley of stability. These nuclei are weakly bound and can exhibit large radial extensions and exotic structures in which the spatial and momentum distribution of the valence particles are very different from normal nuclei. We are proposing to perform experiments induced by light radioactive projectiles at Texas A&M University (TAMU) as well as at Instituto de Física da Universidade de São Paulo (IFUSP). At TAMU we propose to perform fusion experiments for the 6, 7, 8Li and 8B+40Ar systems with the active target TexAT. This device allows the use of a gas as a target medium and detector at the same time and can provide a simultaneously measurement of elastic scattering, breakup and fusion reactions channels in the same experiment. The radioactive beams of 8Li and 8B, at few MeV/u, will be produced by the recoil separator MARS and K500/K150 Superconducting Cyclotron at TAMU. We are also planning to perform experiments in São Paulo related to elastic scattering induced by radioactive 10Be and 12B beams using the RIBRAS system. (AU)
