Abstract

Ontologies are artifacts for knowledge representation where concepts and their interrelations are described within a domain. Ontology Networks are characterized by the existence of heterogeneous ontologies in the same conceptual space. A formal or structured ontology is a well-defined and usually fixed a priori proposition, whereas a soft ontology is more flexible and may be more susceptible to changes in interrelationships over time. The connection among different ontology models is relevant for data integration and information exchange between systems. Although there are techniques to automatically interrelate different ontologies by creating correspondences among terms of similar meanings, a model that interconnects heterogeneous ontologies is still an open research problem. This scientific initiation project aims to investigate ways of allowing concepts specified in ontologies of distinct models to be related to each other. Furthermore, we will study how formal and well-structured ontologies of the Semantic Web can be reconciled with the proposal of soft ontologies. Expected results are models and software tools that allow reconciling ontologies of different nature in a network of ontologies. (AU)
