Abstract

The research will analyze the single-family residential projects of the architect Arnaldo Furquim Paoliello, built in the city of São Paulo and published in the Acropolis magazine between 1953 and 1962. This period corresponds to the consolidation of modern architecture in the city of São Paulo, which begun a few decades earlier. Although the residences show many aspects of modernity, we'll try to see in Paoliello works "laboratorial" elements of modernity, that is, how social relations between clients and architects sometimes allowed the maintenance of spatial solutions typical of other periods, such as the nineteenth-century bourgeois tripartition of plants, the use of building materials and even vegetation in conjunction with the new symbols of spatiality. Thus, we'll seek to collaborate in a double sense: the first, to bring to the public the work of Paoliello, who was well known to the middle and upper classes of the capital during the period of study, but little was dealt with in historiography; and help broaden the scope of understanding about what we can characterize as Modern Paulistan Architecture. In this way, the idea of ambivalence of the modern part of the architectural production of Paoliello and shows as much its character of transition, as of innovation in the architectural scene of the São Paulo capital.
