Abstract

The recent technological development in the manipulation of objects of molecular nature has opened a field of intense research in far from equilibrium statistical mechanics. One of its main problems is the determination of protocols that minimize the energy cost of this manipulation for a given system of interest. In this doctoral project we will develop techniques to systematize the optimization of this thermodynamic work, trying to understand the physics involved in the search for these optimal protocols in finite time, which is little understood. The microscopic approaches that we intend to use have several well-known limitations. Therefore, it will be necessary to combine them with phenomenological information in a consistent way. The bonds imposed by the second law of thermodynamics will help us test the limits of validity of this combination.
