Abstract

Linear response theory is a useful tool to describe situations out of thermodynamic equilibrium in a first approximation. Although relatively quite old and with successful applications in diverse areas, it has been used again as a framework to explore new topics of research in recent times. The present thesis addresses problems involving aspects of the thermodynamic work using linear response theory. In particular, we study the compatibility of this framework with the Second Law of Thermodynamics; the existence of negative values in the entropy production rates in paradigmatic examples; the optimization of the thermodynamic work with such tool; the compatibility of Kibble-Zurek mechanism with this theory and how its extension to nonlinear response theory can present the existence of asymptotic series (AU)
