Abstract

In the second generation (2G) ethanol production process by the enzymatic route, complete saccharification of the cellulose structure is not achieved, especially in processes with high solids loading. This residual solid fraction of the saccharification process of the cellulose is a material with crystalline characteristic, which allows its use in the form of nanocellulose. Nanocellulose, in the form of nanofibers or nanocrystals, has applications in different industrial sectors, such as cosmetics, medicine, packaging industry, biocatalysts, among others. In this postdoctoral proposal, it is proposed the development of a bioprocess to obtain nanocellulose from the residue of the enzymatic hydrolysis, with the substrate derived from sugarcane (straw and bagasse). Different enzymatic cocktails and reactional conditions will be evaluated, as well as the association of mechanical processes aiming at obtaining nanocellulose exclusively by technologies inserted in green chemistry concepts. Thus, in this project the following steps will be performed: 1) obtaining the nanocellulose; 2) physicochemical characterization of the nanomaterials; and 3) evaluating possible applications for this nanomaterial. This will involve both the area of bioprocesses, for optimization of enzymatic cocktails, reactive conditions, more appropriate bioreactors and the association of mechanical treatment, as well as the physical-chemical characterization area of the materials. The evaluation of the application potential of the nanocellulose obtained in three products of technological interest will also be part of the activities foreseen in this postdoctoral proposal. (AU)
