Abstract

Treacher Collins syndrome (TCS) is a hereditary congenital condition which main characteristic is zygomatic and mandibular hypoplasia, associated or not with cleft lip and palate. This congenital anomaly is established during the seventh week of gestation, with an incidence of 1:50,000 live births. In addition to the aesthetic conditions observed, there are also functional and physiological alterations on breathing, chewing, swallowing and hearing.As a result of the impairment of the middle and lower thirds of the face, dimensional reductions of the airways are also expected and may justify the functional condition of the airways, including the maxillary sinus. Considering the important correlation between skeletal dysmorphology and physiological disorder of the upper airways, the investigation of possible skeletal anatomical sites of obstruction is of , in order to establish appropriate guidelines for the rehabilitation of patients with TCS. Thus, the objective of the present study is to three-dimensionally characterize the maxillary sinus volume of adults with TCS using computed tomography, and to compare the results with the volume of the maxillary sinus of individuals without syndromes and with the same skeletal pattern. CBCT scans of 28 adults with TCS and 28 control adults will be evaluated in a prospective cross-sectional study using Dolphin Imaging 11 software. The maxillary sinus will be reconstructed and its internal volume will be obtained. It is our hypothesis that the maxillary sinus of individuals with TCS is reduced when compared to the sinus of individuals without the condition.
