Abstract

The literature recommends therapeutic exercise as an effective intervention but is still scarce as to the best recommendations for the prescription of the exercise, considering type, dose, frequency, supervision, intensity, progression, among others, for fibromyalgia, chronic whiplash associated disorder (CWAD) and chronic idiopathic neck pain (CINP). Therefore, the aims of this project will be: 1) To analyze scientific articles investigating the prescription of therapeutic exercise to treat fibromyalgia, CWAD and CINP by performing a systematic review; and 2) To use a modified Delphi approach to establish a consensus among a panel of international experts about how to prescribe exercise for patients with fibromyalgia, CWAD and CINP. To achieve the first purpose, the search will be performed in the following databases: Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, MEDLINE, EMBASE, ISI WEB of knowledge, CINAHL and PEDro. Randomized controlled trials, with intervention for fibromyalgia, CWAD and CINP and exercise prescription, will be selected. Data related to type of physical exercise, features and parameters, comparator group characteristics, primary and secondary outcomes, and study results will be extracted for analysis. To achieve the second purpose, 200 experts on central sensitization, fibromyalgia, neck pain and exercise will be invited to participate in the modified Delphi study with three rounds, to reach a consensus about which parameters should be consider for prescribing exercises for these conditions.
