Abstract

The development of new materials that are ables to acting as diagnostic agents presenting a large importance in the medical field. In the current realm of diagnostic radiography and computed tomography, a contrast agent is necessary to differentiate between tissue types of similar absorptions. The most commonly used contrast agents are gadolinium, barium and iodine complexes, and although their high effeciency, their toxicity motivates new studies to develop substitutes more efficient and less toxic to the body. Another use for these materials is in the optical biolabelling field or biomarkers, in particular those containing Rare Earth ions which allow for example, the time delayed measurement for complete extinction of the biological self-fluorescence during the measurement. In this context, this project focuses on the synthesis, characterization of Nb2O5: Ln3+ (Ln3+ = La, Gd and Tm) as possible contrast agents and biomarkers. For this, the luminophores materials based on niobium oxide containing the lanthanide ions will be formed by the sol-gel process. The strucure and luminescent properties will be investigated using electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry and luminescence spectroscopy (FTIR and RAMAN) techniques. Finally, these materials will undergo in vitro tests to evaluate their cytotoxity and the real potential as diagnostic agents.
