Abstract

Calophyllaceae is an important representative of different phytophysiognomies of the Cerrado, presenting several endemic and rare species. The family has a pantropical distribution and comprises 13 genera and 460 species, especially Kielmeyera. In addition to this genus, some species are important from the ethnobotanical and economic point of view, such as guanandi (Calophyllum brasiliense), which offers good quality wood, being considered the first wood of Brazil, and Camaçari (Caraipa densifolia) has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-tumor properties, being used for treatments of skin diseases. In general, Calophyllaceae are especially characterized by the presence of secretory structures in all species of this family. These secretory structures are usually represented by ducts and, less frequently, by cavities, idioblasts, laticifers, and / or trichomes. Of all these glands, the ducts stand out because they have caused numerous doubts and controversies about their formation since the first published works with other families of plants. This is most often because only one method of analysis has been used which does not allow to analyze all aspects involved in the possible occurrence of programmed cell death and / or cell withdrawal during lumen formation. Nowadays, we know that the combination of several techniques of analysis of plant material are more effective when analyzed together, and therefore the present study aims to analyze the development of the secretory ducts of the Kielmeyera appariciana with the aim of investigating the different aspects related to the possible occurrence of lysigeny, schizogeny or schizolysigeny. In order to do so, shoot apices will be processed and the secretory ducts analyzed under light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy techniques, as well as immunocytochemical and histochemical evaluations. We will investigate the occurrence of a programmed cell death process and the arrangement of the cytoskeleton during cell differentiation with fluorescent antibodies. Through these analyzes it will be possible to more clearly understand the development of secretory ducts, the mechanism of secretion production and release and the chemical composition of the resin exuded in this species. The results of this work will also help to better understand the way the secretory ducts are formed in general.
