Abstract

This Project is linked to the ongoing doctorate research entitled "Polemics and Inquisition: heresiology and persecution in the Summa Adversus Catharos et Valdenses of the Dominican Moneta of Cremona". This study proposes to examine the way the first Preaching Brothers in Bologna treated the punishment of heretics, in special the death penalty, and the role of the Church and secular authorities in the repression of heresy. We will study two anti-heretical texts: the Summa by Friar Moneta, our main corpus, and the Postilla in Iob by Friar Roland of Cremona. Both Dominicans were part of the first community of Preaching Brothers, in the Bologna convent of San Nicolo of the Vineyards. They also possess very similar life paths: born in the city of Cremona, they were magistri in arts, did their preaching in Northern Italian cities, founded convents and composed anti-heretical works. Traditionally, they are seen as inquisitors by historiography, even if there are no documents that prove this inquisitorial role of Moneta, nor the presence of the qualifier "inquisitor" in Roland's anti-heretical activities. At any rate, the works of both Dominican friars have relations with the Inquisition. In them, the two friars from Cremona address the vindicta against the heretics and the support of secular authorities to the Church in the combat of heresies and the promotion of peace.
