Abstract

In spite of its widespread recognition, Alair Gomes´s work has yet to be fully explored. The core theme of my doctorate is a relevant text of his from 1983 called 'A New Sentimental Journal', a travel diary to Europe, with notes on places and art exhibitions visited by Gomes. The text also carries an erotic character by way of reflections on art, the male body, museums and experiences in several cultural institutions. 'The New Sentimental Journey' is preserved in the National Library in Rio de Janeiro. The original is typed in English, and has more than 530 A4 pages. My project aims at rendering a critical and commented translation to Portuguese, accompanied by a study whose main objective is to detect eventual aesthetic constants, associating them with constants found in his photographic work.
