Abstract

Background: Swimmings is a sports modality that covers different distances and styles, which may expose the athletes to different stress factors that can interfere on training and performance or produce overtraining conditions. This is due to the lack of systematic recovery periods integrated to training programs. Massage is a very common recovery resource in swimming atlhetes. Recent studies show that short term aplication is sufficient to obtain its effects and it is possible that systematic aplication during a period of time can produce larger effects on performance. Aims: To compare massage and placebo effects in clinical, functional and performance aspects, identify short term effects over clinical and functional variables and investigate the association between training load and the atlhetes perceptions. Methods: The sample will be composed of 18 young athletes aging between 12 and 20 years old, randomised in blocks and cross-over allocated to sequences of the following intervention: i) passive recovery, ii) massage and iii) placebo. The athletes will perform five training sessions and three intervention sessios, each week, between the sessions of physical training and swimming training, and a maximum effort test of two sprints of 200m crawl. Training load data (TRIMP), swimmers perceptions (Swimmer's Perception of Effort Questionnaire - SPEQ), sprint time, stroke characteristics and physical evaluation (flexibility, power and proprioception) will be collected. The data analysis will be performed by descriptive method, variance analysis (ANOVA) and Bonferroni or Dunn post-tests. The significance level will be stablished as p<0,05 for all tests.
