Abstract

This proposal consists of the extension of the project Fapesp Nr 2016/06043-1. The study proposed has the objective of evaluating the advantages of implementing a mechanism that allows an internal combustion engine to adjust its compression ratio and cubic capacity. The study focus on the implementation of such mechanism in spark-ignition engines fuelled with ethanol aiming the adjustment of compression ratio and cubic capacity in order to maximize efficiency. A conventional engine operates at low compression ratio when there is no knock onset, and with a restrained air flow due to throttle actuation at partial loads. By reducing cubic capacity and increasing compression ratio according to the operational condition of the engine, the cited losses can be avoided. Thus, the technology proposed promises to bring a significant gain of efficiency in partial loads conditions. To perform the analysis, it is necessary to develop simulations tools. The simulation model has to be capable of predicting engine performance and knock onset, which is a critical phenomenon influencing compression ratio control. Then, the developed tools have to be validated with experimental results obtained from a conventional engine. Afterwards, with the validated simulation tools implemented and validated, the operation of the proposed engine can be estimated. After the simulations being performed, a prototype will be tested in bench and the obtained results will be compared with the results found in the simulations, validating then and indicating the benefits gained with the implementation of the technology. In the previous project, the development and validation of the simulations tools have been already completed. The new proposal for extension of the project consists of the final part of the research, which comprehends the completion of the simulations predicting the operation and the execution of experimental tests for validation on the prototype.
