Abstract

The main narrative that underpins state violence organization, as well as international relations foundational discourse, consist in the sharp division between internal and external space. Under this perspective, physical borders, political community and the allocation of states violence means are overlapped. The research problem that guides this study is: how the legitimation process of states lethal force employment takes place? We sustain that legitimation - understood as the process of drawing boundaries of acceptable action - of armed forces employment against certain threat stems from the intersection of two factors: moral exclusion, defined as characterizing a person or a group as outsider of a political community boundary; and military role, that is to say the way in which armed forces perceive themselves and are perceived by the society they belong. For this purpose, we undertake two theoretical debates: one about the relation among state, political community and violence instruments, and another about the connection among threat construction, action and the selection of institutional instrument to use. Furthermore, we seek to analyze legitimation through historical cases. (AU)
