Abstract

The use of live animals for didactic purposes is an old practice that is still used in teaching and research institutions. However, there are several objections to using this practice, whether ethical or even humanitarian. The objective of the present study was to analyze the viability and use of the stomach, small intestine and urinary vesicle of swine fixed in ethyl alcohol and preserved in a hypertonic aqueous solution of sodium chloride, as an alternative method, for use in practical classes in the discipline of surgical technique. It is expected that this method of preservation of fresh viscera maintain the morphological and organoleptic characteristics of these viscera so that they can be used for practical training of the main surgical techniques involving these organs in the discipline of Surgical Technique of the Veterinary Medicine Course of the Departamento de Medicina Veterinária (ZMV) of the Faculdade de Zootecnia e Engenharia de Alimentos (FZEA) of the Universidade de São Paulo (USP), Campus Fernando Costa, Pirassununga-SP.
