Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the reproductive performance of males partridges (Rhynchotus rufescens), submitted or not to induction of reproduction by light control, using artificial insemination. The induction of reproduction will be performed from July with controlled artificial light, respecting a rest period of 3 months (March to June). In the first reproductive season, 20 of 60 males will be selected for ease in semen collection and sperm production. In the second, males will be divided into four groups.Control (natural light) inseminated group and natural breeding group. Treated (16 hours of light and 8 hours of darkness) inseminated group and natural breeding group. From each group the semen will be collected and the artificial insemination of 10 females/group will be performed. For the inseminated group and 15 females/group for the natural breeding group. The semen will be collected twice/week, by cloacal and abdominal massage, and analyzed for motility, vigour, concentration, morphology and integrity of membrane and acrosome (flow cytometry). After collection and evaluation, the semen will be diluted and inseminations will be performed by depositing it directly into the females' vagina. After insemination productive and reproductive performance will be evaluated, including egg production rate, embryonic viability, egg weight, egg production, birth weight of the cub, number of eggs and ratio of the largest and minor axis.
