Abstract

The central element of this work is to conduct a survey to determine the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in bacteria as measured in the faeces of Brazilian beef cattle and the potential of tannins in antimicrobial properties and your antibiotic resistance modifying properties. Weaned cattle (approximately 12 months old) will be compared with finishing cattle (approximately 24 months old). Rearing farms will be identified in both the Cerrado and in the more intensively managed São Paulo region. At these farms, samples of faeces will be taken from ten animals for analysis. Samples of the forages being consumed by the different groups of animals at each farm will also be taken. For this proposed project, we will use Escherichia coli and Enterococcus spp as sentinel gram negative and positive bacteria respectively. Will be determined phenotypically the prevalence of AMR in faeces as an indicator of AMR bacterial load in the animal. This will be further characterized by determining the extent, by functional metagenomics, of genes coding for AMR in faecal samples. Differences between weaned and finishing cattle, feedlot and pasture system, and between Cerrado pasture and more intensively managed pasture will be explored. Such differences will be related to differences in the composition of the microbiome and the potential intake of tannins of different composition. Therefore, this project will help determine to ascertain whether changes to the management of beef cattle in Brazil can be recommended that would help in the efforts to halt or reduce the spread of AMR in Brazilian beef cattle.
