Abstract The time cut proposed here corresponds to a fundamental period for theunderstanding of maritime/river work and the associative life of seamen in the Port of Manaus. A few years ago, historiography has affirmed the relative importance that the category playedin the labor movement of the Amazon. In deed, at the beginning of the 20th century, seafarers were pioneers in the associative culture of the workers of the Amazonian capital. From 1905 until 1927, the creation of different maritime groupings by craft and collective actions, as well as the with subjects from different parts of Brazil and the were enrolled in the Port of Manaus. One of the reasons for this is in the context of the "rubber cycle"(1870-1920), which provided better job opportunities in the process of navigation. Between 1930 and 1940, the first maritime trade unions emerged, which possible transformations in the associative experiences of seamen. The objective here is to factors that led to the unification of the category and the aspects that divided it into its life and work, taking into account the specificities of the professional group under study. At sources of research are, mainly, of workers' newspapers and of the great press, documentation and the judiciary. The four-decade cut makes it possible toto understand continuities and ruptures in the experiences of sailors throughout the First Republic and until the end of World War II. (AU) | |
