Abstract

Snake venoms are complex protein mixtures with diverse biological activities, both in their prey and in human victims. Many of these proteins play an important role in catching preys and in the digestive process of these animals. The variability in the activity and venom composition is a fact described in many works and it occurs in several levels: ontogenetic, geographic, sexual, alimentary, inter and intraspecific. Ontogenetic changes are observed in different snake species in many parts of the current proteomics research. Their implications cause the emergence of new hypotheses that contribute to a greater understanding of the complexity of the venoms and, in the case of biotechnology, new forms and possibilities of development and use of biomolecules with a wide range of applications. The Bothrops jararacussu snake belongs to the Viperidae family and is part of the group of snakes of the bothropic genus existing in Brazil. This individual is also considered the species with the highest myotoxic activity among the genus. In addition, B. jararacussu has a peculiarity: its venom has a low immunogenicity rate. Vital Brazil, in 1909, demonstrated that the lethal activity of the venom from B. jararacussu is best neutralized by the anticrotic serum. The investigator also suggested that the antibotropic-crotalic serum should be used in accidents with these individuals, to better neutralize their lethal potential. Despite so many peculiarities in the composition of its venom, it is interesting to note the lack of attention that this species has received in the last years of research. With this in mind, this present study aims to perform an ontogenetic and seasonal analysis of the B. jararacussu venom, accompanying the development of individuals born at the Laboratory of Herpetology of the Butantan Institute until adulthood, as well as adult individuals originally from nature.
