Abstract In this project, we investigate the quantum features of the cooperation of cold atoms in dilute clouds as they scatter light. The photons mediate a long-range interaction between the atomic dipoles, which results in various phenomena such as super- and subradiance, and coherent backscattering. These effects will here be studied in the regime of a strong driving of dilute clouds, looking for signatures of the presence of two-atom non-classical correlations in the intensity and optical coherences of the scattered light. With this we hope to be able to identify the role of the correlations between atoms like entanglement, quantum discord, or classical correlations, on the processes of light scattering. By using approximate schemes for the dynamics of quantum systems, we aim to study large systems of hundreds to thousands of particles, in order to extract the scaling laws necessary for experimental predictions. | |
