Abstract

In 2015, the amount of waste generated by the Bayer Process (red mud) has reached a mark of 4 billion tonnes worldwide, twice as much as at the beginning of the century. This increase was caused by the increase in the consumption of aluminum, whose most used raw material is the alumina obtained in the Bayer Process. Although its composition is mostly iron, aluminum and silica, metals such as titanium, zirconium and rare earth elements, such as scandium and yttrium, can also be found. The demand for these elements is increasing, whose main applications are electronic devices such as smartphones and smartTV televisions, and for green energy generation. However, processes that are economical and technically feasible are still being developed, and research and innovation in the field are crucial. From this, the present work aims at the recovery of scandium present in the Brazilian red mud residue by hydrometallurgical techniques. The first part of the work will focus on the characterization of the residue to determine the concentration of scandium and other metals in its composition, and the physical characterization. The next step will be the study of acid leaching from the variables temperature, reaction time, acid concentration and liquid/solid ratio. From the results obtained will be proposed a mathematical model for the leaching of scandium from the residue of Brazilian red mud. The third part of the work will be destined to the selective separation of metals by means of the solvent extraction technique studying variables such as temperature and pH. A continuous system will also be evaluated in order to simulate the entire industrial process for the study of technical and economic viability. (AU)
