Study of the electrochemical behavior of the montmorillonite-8-hydroxyquinoline composite in the determination of potentially toxic metal ions in water

Abstract

The anthropogenic activities and population increases have been the main cause to environmental damage especially in water resources, which are the main target of dumps containing potentially toxic and non-biodegradable pollutants that have among them metallic ions, a problem in which the present project is inserted. The clay minerals are potentially retentive of these ions and have been an object of attention since they present technical-economic feasibility due to their potentiality in what concerns the adsorption phenomena and reuse. In this context, the present project aims to evaluate the electrochemical and electroanalytical behavior of modified microstructured system montmorillonite-8-hydroxyquinoline (SWy-1:8-HQ) composite clay as a platinum disc electrode modifying agent, considering its ability to complex a considerable number of metallic ions (Mn+). It is proposed the physical-chemical and surface characterization of the binary (SWy-1:8-HQ) and ternary (SWy-1:8-HQ-Mn+) composites by thermal analysis (TG-DTA, DSC), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical microscopy and infrared spectroscopy (FTIR- ATR). The characterization of the electrochemical point of view will be carried out by means of the cyclic voltammetry (CV) technique, starting with the evaluation of the effect of the number of depositions of the binary composite on the platinum disk electrode on the voltammetric profile, followed by a study of the electrochemical response and mechanical stability of the film deposited on the electrode. Will be carried out later the study of the electrochemical behavior of the modified electrode in the presence of potentially toxic metal ions Mn+= Ni(II) and Co(II), among others.The development of the electroanalytical application of the modified electrode in the quantification of Mn+ ions is proposed concomitantly the validation of analytical procedures, the achievement of performance parameters such as limits of detection and quantification, working range, linearity, outliers, intermediate precision condition, repeatability condition, a survey of sources of uncertainty and uncertainty estimation for the results.
