Abstract

The growth of the aerospace Market has been increasing competition among aircraft manufacturers, leading them to reduce operating costs and search for creative solutions. In this perspective, the constant search for increasingly efficient materials, methods and processes that allow the reduction of the weight and the consumption of fuel is noticed, raising the performance of the aircraft and contributing with the environment. Thus, new ultralight metal alloys are studied and developed in order to replace the traditional alloys, seeing a decrease in structural weight and gain in specific resistance. The present work aims to study the corrosion behavior and mechanisms of the non-flammable WE43 (Mg - Y - Nd - Zr)magnesium alloy, which exhibits stability of mechanical properties and creep resistance at temperatures up to 300 pC and corrosion superior to AZ and AM alloys, and thesed are comparable to those of aluminum alloys used in the aeronautical industry. For comparative purposes, pure metallic magnesium and aluminum alloy AA7050 will also be analyzed. Optical microscopy will be used for micro structural characterization, as well as the immersion corrosion test and the method proposed by Song and Atrens (2003) to determine the rate of corrosion by measuring the evolution of hydrogen, as well as the use of the Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy (KPFM) technique. At the end of this research it is expected to obtain important information about the corrosion micromechanisms existing in the conditions studied here, compared with the alloys already used.
