Abstract

This project aims at assessing methods to reduce the spatial inequalities present in the usage of social media data as a proxy for real-world phenomena such as heavy rains and floods. A methodological framework for identifying social media activity patterns in urban areas will be established using an interdisciplinary approach to multi-scale analysis that is calibrated with environmental sensor data and socioeconomic factors. This will allow us (i) to develop and incorporate a spatial statistical analysis of the intra-urban inequalities, (ii) to provide an indicator of spatial fairness of the usage of social media activity, and (iii) to identify and forecast extreme weather events to support crisis preparedness and response. On this basis, we will examine how spatial equalities/inequalities can be represented sensitively and informatively.
