Abstract

Al-based quasicrystalline phase former alloys are metastable materials, which form a quasicrystalline phase (QC) in a Al matrix. The combination of the high strength QC phase in a ductile Al matrix gives rise to composites with good mechanical properties. These composites exhibit high mechanical strength and wear resistance in high temperatures and are promising for several high temperature applications as dies, coatings and coolers. High cooling rates are needed to precipitate the QC phase, which is usually only formed in ribbons and powders. The high cooling rate (~10^3 K/s) applied during laser-based additive manufacturing (AM) processes may allow the formation of the QC phase in bulk samples. The aim of the master project is to investigate the possibility to use the AM process of Selective Laser Melting (SLM) to form these composites and study their mechanical properties. Nevertheless, the SLM machine is not available at DEMa/UFSCar yet. The present BEPE FAPESP project will allow the student to have access to the SLM machine available at the Leibniz-Institut für Werkstofforientierte Technologien - IWT Bremen and get more experience with this process. The IWT Bremen is an old partner of the DEMa/UFSCar research group and is a well-known group in the area of powder metallurgy. The student will stay four months in Germany to prepare different SLM samples, which will be completed characterized in her return to DEMa/UFSCar. (AU)
