Abstract

The species of the Mazama genus are closely related and similar morphologically although they differ in the value of their diploid numbers, a circumstance that culminated in errors of taxonomic classification and the discovery of new species. The occurrence of chromosomal rearrangements and the remarkable observation of intraspecific chromosomal polymorphism in the species of the group, facilitate the formation of new species in a situation of geographic isolation in a short period of time. The chromosomal evolution of Mazama species from the ancestral hypothetical karyotype, retained by the species Mazama gouazoubira, is poorly understood and lacks molecular cytogenetic analysis. Studies have shown great difficulty in characterizing chromosomal markers from probes produced by microdissection due to centromeric nonspecific markings in the heterochromatin region. As a result of the rapid evolution and degeneration of repetitive DNA sequences an alternative to solve the problem of nonspecific markings is to work with chromosome painting between different species. The present study aims to characterize the homologies between bovine BACs probes and the chromosomes of the M. gouazoubira species. It is expected that the study contributes as a baselie for subsequent analysis, enabling to review the taxonomy of the Mazama species and elucidate the evolutionary processes that involved the group.
