Abstract

In recent years the prevalence of obesity and diabetes have reached alarming rates. This situation may be related to the worldwide increase in the dietary share of ultraprocessed foods. The aim of this proposal is to advance in the analysis of the influence of ultraprocessed foods consumption on health outcomes, particularly obesity and diabetes and increase the robustness of the causal relationship. A prospective study of the association between consumption of ultra-processed foods and the incidence of diabetes, mediated by obesity in the UK population will be carried out. We will use data from the Biobank cohort, which has been following the UK adult population since 2006. Our exposure variable will be the share of ultraprocessed foods in total calories and our outcomes, the incidence of diabetes, mediated by obesity. Measures of proportional hazards will be obtained using Cox regression models. Mediation analyses will be conducted to explore and quantify the total direct and indirect effects of obesity in these associations. Additionally, we intend to strengthen the institutional partnership between the University of São Paulo and the Imperial College of London, and provide knowledge of longitudinal study analysis techniques, enabling the creation of a postgraduate course in Preventive Medicine in Brazil.
